A Letter from Joey Peters of The Santa Fe Reporter

This letter was sent to us by the SFReporter's Joey Peters for distribution. Joey is reminding us that whether we talk to a journalist or a legislator about the atrocities suffered at Camp Torres it is illegal for anyone to retaliate against us. It is important that as many of us come forward with our own names and be heard because without a face nothing to be done to stop management's wrongs. Joey is a great person to talk to because he will only use what you are comfortable with. If you need help contacting a legislator shoot us an email. dohcrisis@gmail.com

Here's Joey's letter:

Concerned DOH employees,

The allegations against Dr. Torres' management are very serious. I keep hearing left and right that countless employees are leaving because of Catherine Torres' management style. If true, ultimately, those who lose the most are the large chunk of New Mexicans who rely on public health.

If it can be proven that Torres leadership is detrimental to the employees and public health, people won't be taking the info lightly. But in order to prove anything, I need all the help I can get. My office, phone, email address are always open to hear what's going on at DOH.

If you contact me, it will always be on your own terms (including when and where we meet, whether it's off the record, etc.) Federal and state Shield Laws give me the right to protect my sources, ie, to not disclose their names to authorities or anyone else.

Also, the state Whistleblower Protection Act gives any of you the right to contact lawmakers and the governor with concerns about your management. Any retaliation is illegal. See section 3 on page 2: http://www.nmlegis.gov/Sessions/10%20Regular/final/HB0165.pdf

Thanks,
Joey Peters

  1. There is no better time to make some noise than during a session of legislature. Legislators know it is going but they can only act if people come forward. That is what I was told Lucky Varela and others.

  2. Joey,
All the laws and rules in the world can't protect us from corrupt DOH managers like Torres. Ask Bob Ortiz, he talked to the Santa Fe Reporter in September and they did an article. In November Bob Ortiz disappeared and hasn't been seen since HR tapped him on the shoulder and took him away. No, retaliation is alive and well at NMDOH and no one is going to put a stop to it. Bob will have to get his satisfaction in court, Just like Diane More did.
    Thanks for trying Joey,

  3. There is no protection. The whistleblower act means nothing. They will fire u or force u out. No one is safe. U can't risk your family. No one cares about DOH.

  5. We have a responsibility to the people of New Mexico NOT to Dr. Torres or her goons. If you don't talk to Joey, talk to a legislator.

If you need contact info or don't know who to talk to let me know.

  6. NM Sunshine Portal has Bob Ortiz still employed at DOH as of 1/16/12?

I think this quote applies pretty well. It is about the inactivity of German intellectuals following the Nazi rise to power and the purging of their chosen targets, group after group. Parallels are easily drawn.

First they came for the communists,
    and I didn't speak out because I wasn't a communist.

Then they came for the trade unionists,
    and I didn't speak out because I wasn't a trade unionist.

Then they came for the Jews,
    and I didn't speak out because I wasn't a Jew.

Then they came for the Catholics,
and I didn't speak out because I was Protestant.

    Then they came for me
and there was no one left to speak out for me.

  9. I absolutely loved working at NM DOH, the environment was productive, people were allowed to do their jobs and were happy doing them. That all ended when Cabinet Secretary Torres came aboard (and that is how you have to address her) We want from Alredo to Cabinet Secretary Torres, says alot doesn't it? Her militant nazi, micro-managing ways have a left a bitter taste in employees and customers alike. The DOH morale can be likened to an endless pit of despair. Progress is at a stand still as everything has to go through her toad like clutches. She demands approval on everything RFP's, Purchase Orders, websites, newsletters, photo's, etc. It took over 11 months for her to release her first address to DOH employees and she didn't formally introduce herself until Halloween. Seeing her in a black miniskirt was enough to give anyone nightmares.

I left DOH because of her. Like I said I loved my job, my peers, my customers but couldn't stand working for someone who has a hidden agenda and your only options of success were her way or no way.

By the way, I do have a call into Joey Peters. As an ex-Doh employee maybe the information I have can be of help to my former co-workers.

    2. I spoke with Joey yesterday and I have email proof too of her militant pyschotic demands...even though I'm not there anymore, still paranoid and fearful about putting my name out there. Sad huh?

  10. Tired of this crap1/24/12, 6:14 PM

    Joey,

In early March 2011, the DOH Division Directors were told to inform their employees that anyone that who made disparaging remarks to the press about Secretary Torres, she would personally fire. Any wonder why employees aren't coming forward?

  11. Tired,

I work in PHD. My bureau chief told us the same thing! They were told by Maggie, that Secretary Torres left no doubt about what would happen. Torres expected all her division/program directors to control their employees.

  14. I work in one of the clinics down south. I can confirm the threat was passed on to us as well. We just want to be left alone to serve our clients.

  15. ITSD was told the same thing. No one is to question her authority...

  16. Our current Div. Dir Cathy Stevenson, at DDS sent out an email update in the spring advising us of Secretary Torres' threat. I wished I had the email.

It is unanimous, Secretary Torres is not a proponent of the 1st Amendment but enthusiastically supports retaliation against employees that attempt to bring to bear their rights to freedom of speech.
