Sequoyah: Director Anita Westbrook Sends (Propaganda) Email to Staff After a Surprise Visit

On Wednesday, director Anita Westbrook of the Sequoyah Adolescent Treatment Center, sent out an email to staff that many said sounded eerie.    What was so peculiar was the tone of the email  One staff member called the email, "Pure spin."

The email sounds like a lot of the other DOH statements in the past.

Westbrook, Anita, DOH

To:DSH-SATC

As many of you know, Sequoyah had a one-day Joint Commission survey yesterday. As a part of the survey, the Joint Commission representative reviewed patient care records, policies and procedures, toured the facility, and spoke with staff. We will be receiving a written report in the near future. In the exit interview, the surveyor reported that staff were pleased regarding our changes and that our initiative to reduce seclusion and restraint was working. He indicated that we do have an opportunity to improve our paperwork, which will include recommendations around authentication of telephone orders and restraint documentation. We will start immediately on those opportunities for improvement. Gayle Nash, chief nurse for the department, was present for the survey, and she reported that “it was a good day for Sequoyah.”

On another note, thank you for the excellent attendance at last week’s “All Staff” meeting and to those of you who were present for our “Trauma Informed Care” workgroup that met yesterday. We will be providing periodic specific updates to you about the group’s work efforts, but overall staff reported that we had an excellent first meeting. I’m also very pleased to let you know that Gayle Nash, along with Louie Trujillo, Director of Clinical Performance for the department, will be spending more time at Sequoyah, rounding on all shifts and working with staff on further system changes and improving communication among all staff. I think that both are skilled professionals who will be assets to us in our quality improvement efforts, and I look forward to having them in our facility.

  1. Fact vs. Fiction12/17/12, 8:03 AM

    The Truth:
    1) I believe this is the first all-staff e-mail that Ms. Westbrook has ever sent her employees.
    2) JACHO was doing an investigation in response to complaints, NOT a one-day survey.
    3) Licensing, as well as Optum, had also been there in that past week responding to problems.
    4) Many staff felt angry and disgusted when they left the staff meeting, and, as is the culture now, most were too fearful to speak at that meeting.

  2. That made me dizzy just reading it! So much spin!

  3. WE are also skilled professionals, Anita. Too bad you never took time away from your interior decorating projects (admin bldg, NOT resident lodges) to get acquainted with your staff and the program.

    ReplyDelete
  4. I wonder if Anita realizes the results of this "survey" will be public record?

    ReplyDelete
  5. This memo is a not so quiet threat to employees to acquiesce to new changes or they will lose their job. Anita still has her hit list and is checking it twice. The real spin is that Anita is problematic to Sequoyah not the employees. You can't preach trauma informed care when you are hateful towards select employees and cover it up with expensive presents for the kids.

    1. Anita is hateful to all employees, even her favorites. It is hard on everyone to work in a hostile work environment, creating stress, paranoia, trauma and resentment.

    2. Anita Westbrook is a terrible person. So sorry you are stuck with her SATC!!

    3. When Anita Westbrook retires in November 2013 (if she is permitted to continue until then) she will know that she had absolutely no respect or regard from those she managed. She will take no pride in any accomplishments. Her very poor track record in all of her jobs and the facilities she messed up, the lives she disrupted of those good employees she fired, will be her legacy. She has to live with that, if she even cares.

    4. Wow. Very sad. SATC is to supply treatment, safety, comfort, trust, family, support and to give tools to the clients to live a safe, happy and positive life. If the director is not providing that in her own life and work place to her employees, how are the employees going to provide it to the clients? I'm sorry that the employees are suffering, but I'm especially sorry that the boys.

    5. Interesting and sad that there have been more expensive gifts and treats given to the boys this year by Anita and Dr. Mirin, yet the residents have been more dysregulated, needy and aggressive than I have ever seen them this time of year. I think this is because of the chaotic and stressful environment that Sequoyah has become and because the staff they counted on has been taken away or stretched too thin. Now frequently there is no more than 2 staff members covering the 9 boys where there were always at least 3 before. Now, if one resident goes off and needs to be removed from the milieu, the whole facility is thrown off as they scramble to see how to provide coverage.

  6. Sounds like satc is creating its own circle of trash!

    1. And that circle of trash is very close to turning on themselves. Sit back and watch. Never seen so many grossly incompetent new administrative staff making poor decisions. Its become a cluster ####. And that's really sad for the kids.

  7. I heard that one of the nurse's at NMRC reported NMRC to JCAHO for inappropriate use of restraints and she and another nurse was fired today. NMRC has not used restraints in years and now Gayle Nash is going after their nursing license too. Beware DOH employees the circle of trash is all around you.

    1. Tell that nurse to call Diane Garrity or Linda Hemphill in Santa Fe. Definately sounds like whistleblower lawsuit to me!

    2. There's something very disturbing about Gayle Nash.

      Delete
    3. Yea, Gayle reminds me of Anita.

    4. NMRC has progressively become a very unpleasant place to work. Those nurses will have no problem defending their licenses. I heard that restraints aren't even mentioned in the orientation. The only reason anyone stays there is to eke out retirement. You should have read some of the replies to their most recent employee satisfaction survey. The nurses are well rid of NMRC.

    5. One of the nurses fired was on probation. The other nurse has received a notice of contemplated action to be fired. She is still reporting to work as scheduled, awaiting a decision. If Nash reported her to the Board of Nursing, she shouldn't be still taking care of patients. If Nash reports her NOW it would really look like retaliation for filing a grievance. The other nurses are now feeling a little bit intimidated by the whole situation and looking for other jobs. Miserable place to work.

    6. Same pattern throughout DOH- set an example by getting rid of a few people and scare the rest into submission. DOH nation we need to stand up! More people need to be strong and brave or the bullies will win! Stand up for yourselves, your co-workers, and most importantly our clients and patients! Media attention and lawsuits are coming, we just need to keep adding to it! Contact Johnathan or an attorney if you need help figuring out what to do!

    7. I am very blessed to have retired from ASD/Department of Hell on November 2012. While there I had to work for a crappy cast of characters, the likes of Gary Giron, Sandra Haug, Albino Martinez, JoAnn Marquez, Mike Mulligan, Duffy Rodriguez, and Jim Green. To say these people are scum is kind. The good part is that I survived it and their shitty games they played me. I held my head up high, never coward down to them, may have paid the price job wise, but at the end of the day, I retired knowing that I earned my retirement with dignity, integrity and without having to kiss any of their asses. Some of these fools are still stuck there, who's the joke on now. The point of it all is earn an honest living, stick to your convictions and let time take care of these losers, because believe me it will. These idiots forget there is life after the State of New Mexico and we all meet up again somewhere. Keep up the fight DOH Nation. May justice prevail!!

    8. TRH, Glad you made it. Integrity and dignity are words that are foreign to the people you mentioned. It was an honor to work with you! Hope you enjoy your retirement. God bless! Please pray for the rest of us.

    9. Thanks Socorro, time goes by quick, you'll be amazed at how many awful people will come and go through your career. But, guess what, you'll still be standing!!! Vengence is mine sayth the Lord, In God we Trust. You my friend show that there are still honorable people working at DOH.

  8. Isn't NMRC one of Dr. Mirin's contracts? Figures.

  9. SATC is becoming increasingly chaotic and dangerous by the day due to the management in charge. When a patient gets seriously hurt by another patient (any day now), I will testify against the state when the parents sue.

  10. Merry Christmas, good people of Sequoyah. Be safe and hang in there. Hopefully the new year will bring good things back to us! (And more importantly, hopefully some bad people will GO!)

  11. Happy New Year SATC, hopefully 2013 will bring in a good cleaning crew to get rid of the past years TRASH that resides in the Administration office and the Medical wing. Hopefully 2013 will also bring the kids at SATC a fighting chance for their futures! Be safe and Happy New Year!

  12. just wondering?1/10/13, 11:45 AM

The kids at Sequoyah are on medical separation and in their rooms since our new DON forgot to get them their flu shots. Since she's still in probation wouldn't this be grounds for termination since Anita has fired others for much less?

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. "Medical separation" - Is that a milder word for "quarantine"?

      Delete
    2. Quarantine...WOW!!! How do you forget to give flu shots? I thought the kids were priority? How is a mistake like this allowed to happen in the first place? As a parent I made sure my kids got their flu shot before I did! Who is going to be held accountable?

      Delete
    3. Not that I am any fan of the DON but isn't she pretty new? Wouldn't that have been the medical directors responsibility?

      Delete
    4. dr. Plumber loves giving shots....But I guess only the kind that knock kids out!

    5. Hmmmmm.... and who would the medical director be???

  13. Another example of Anita Westbrook's misplaced priorities and atrocious management.

  15. Isn't Gayle Nash supposed to be the head DON for DOH? Hasn't she been lurking around SATC? How come she didn't notice the kids were not vaccinated?

  16. Looks like someone spent too much time decorating, getting rid of qualified/competant employee's, and flexing their authority muscle's than actually looking out for the vulnerable clients that they are suppose to be serving! Shame, shame, shame!!!

    ReplyDelete
  17. SATC always had an Infection Control nurse until Anita Westbrook decided it wasn't necessary. Both of the former infection control nurses would have implemented prevention procedures two month ago.

    ReplyDelete
  18. And while the DON trues to solve behavioral health problems she just created a huge one. The kids can't go to school and are going nuts being kept in their rooms. Psychologically speaking this she is a detriment to a healthy program.

    1. I'm sure the stress of this whole (preventable) situation is also tough for the frontline staff! Keep up the GREAT work that you and wash, wash, wash your hands frequently so you don't take whatever illness that is speading around there home to you families!

  19. I would like to point out the connection between McGrath and Gayle Nash: while McGrath was CEO at Eastern New Mexico Medical Center in Roswell, Gayle was bought in as a consultant to evaluate the hospital for survey readiness, as there had been so much turnover in administration. Brad and her have a relationship from his Carlsbad hospital days too. I would say their working arrangements have continued. On the same vein, Dr. Babak Mirin, his cousin (another Dr. Mirin), and Jeff Gardner were all at ENMMC together at the same time.

All these fools represent a hostile takeover of the service agencies of DOH. Hope the AG goes after each and every one of them! Gary King where are you?
